Americana singer-songwriter Brooke Ashton has recently released her latest long-player, The Love of Song, a collection of songs that explore motifs of motherhood, self-discovery, and the power of music.

Ashton shares, “‘The ‘Love of Song’ is a heartfelt album full of songs carefully selected to take the listener on a journey. It was born out of a lifelong relationship with music as both a refuge and companion. Each track was written in honest moments where melodies helped me make sense of real life.”
While recording The Love of Song, Ashton lost her producer and close friend. The loss, along with other obligations, resulted in the album taking three years to finish.
Originally from Pennsylvania and now living in South Carolina, Ashton’s songs reveal a conviction in the healing power of music, its ability to connect people, and its honesty.
According to Ashton, “Music and songwriting have been a lifeline through every season of my life. I couldn’t keep these songs from the world – not with the chance that someone might benefit from hearing them. I didn’t set out to make a statement with this album. I just followed the songs where they led, and in the end, it became a reflection of how deeply I love the craft of songwriting.”
Encompassing 10 tracks, entry points include the album’s opener, “Mother Nature’s Song,” a bluegrass tune with hints of gospel flavors. There’s a delicious, weathered drawl to Ashton’s voice – distinctively vintage and oh-so appealing.
A personal favorite, “Circles” rides on darker instruments, giving off a slightly portentous aura, simultaneously viscous and a bit wicked.
The slow, rolling sway and country blues surfaces of “It Takes A Woman” make it a gem. There’s a nasal edge to Ashton’s vocals that’s uniquely alluring and unlike the run-of-the-mill vocalists. Unique wins out over conventional every day of the week because of its authenticity.
Another favorite because of its syncopated rhythm and luscious, pushing motion, “Superman’s Cape” features hints of Celtic sparks – a gleaming, undulating melody topped by Ashton’s marvelously expressive voice.
“I’m a little bit homesick” is the initial phrase of “Homesick,” a gentle, acoustic guitar-driven track that adds wistful, flowing strings as the song proceeds. Soft and delicate, Ashton’s vocals capture the poignancy and empty feeling of homesickness.
With The Love of Song, Brooke Ashton not only shows off her inimitable voice, but she also spins out delightful Americana gold.
