Andhra Pradesh Assembly Speaker C Ayyanna Patrudu on Wednesday announced that the Assembly building would be opened to the public on August 14 and 15 as part of the new ‘Mana Sabha-Jana Sabha’ initiative.
Under the initiative, people can visit the Assembly building between 6 pm and 9 pm on both days as part of the Independence Day celebrations.
“We have decided to open the Legislative Assembly to the public on August 14 and 15 under the ‘Mana Sabha-Jana Sabha’ (Our Assembly-People’s Assembly) initiative to strengthen people’s connection with democratic institutions,” Patrudu said in a press release.
He said the Assembly building and Secretariat were illuminated every year on August 14-15 and January 25-26 to mark Independence Day and Republic Day, but noted that few people, apart from government employees and security personnel, visited them on those occasions.
He said the decision was guided by the belief that “society is the temple and people are the gods”, stressing that public participation was the foundation of democracy.
Patrudu said people should have an opportunity to visit the “sacred temple” where their elected representatives work and expressed hope that the initiative would strengthen the bond between citizens, public representatives and democratic institutions.
He made a special appeal to educational institutions to bring school and college students to the Assembly on August 14 and 15 to help them understand democracy, constitutional institutions and the sacrifices made by freedom fighters.
The Speaker invited people from surrounding villages, farmers who had made sacrifices for the capital and students to participate in the celebrations, saying the Assembly was “their institution”.
He stressed the importance of creating awareness among future generations about democracy, governance and the Constitution, and said the visit would remain a lasting memory for students.
To combine education with entertainment, patriotic songs will be performed by police bands and musical groups during the two-day programme.
Patrudu urged people to make use of the opportunity, engage with democratic institutions and spread the message of patriotism.
