Normally, fans of The White Lotus have to wait for its premiere to understand the mystery behind its doors. But in The White Lotus season four, the mystery has moved from the screen to reality. The sudden departure of new cast member Helena Bonham Carter just days into shooting has become the first great enigma of this season, leaving the French Riviera production in a scenario as uncertain as one of Mike White‘s scripts.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, an HBO spokesperson confirmed the Fight Club star’s departure, saying via statement that “With filming just underway on season four of The White Lotus, it had become apparent that the character which Mike White created for Helena Bonham Carter did not align once on set.”

“The role has subsequently been rethought, is being rewritten and will be recast in the coming weeks,” the statement continued. “HBO, the producers and Mike White are saddened that they won’t get to work with her, but remain ardent fans and very much hope to work with the legendary actress on another project soon.”

In the absence of further details, speculation about what really happened on the set is continuing to grow. The Daily Mail quotes an anonymous source as saying “The word is Helena left because of a clash with (fellow cast member) Sandra Bernhard,” but representatives for Helena Bonham Carter deny that claim, and say the two have never even met.

Little is known about the plot of the show’s fourth installment, which also stars Steve Coogan, Caleb Jonte Edwards, Marissa Long, Alexander Ludwig, Chris Messina, and AJ Michalka. We do know that the season is set in French Riviera, with the Cannes Film Festival as a backdrop. The story will be set in two luxury hotels: the Hôtel Martinez, which will serve as the White Lotus Cannes, and the majestic Château de la Messardière in Saint-Tropez, renamed for the fiction as the White Lotus du Cap.

In this environment of yachts, red carpets and excesses, the cast will give life to a new group of guests whose vacation, if the season follows tradition, will be cut short by a crime. A crime, it appears, that Helena Bonham Carter will have no part of.
