A former Washington Redskins safety found himself reunited with an old coach on Sunday.
Former Washington safety Chris Horton was in the news on Sunday as he was hired by John Harbaugh to be the special teams coordinator for the Commanders‘ NFC East rival, the New York Giants.
Horton, 41, had worked the past 11 NFL seasons under Harbaugh with the Baltimore Ravens. Harbaugh must still have found Horton’s work of good value, because when forming his initial staff with the Giants, he wanted Horton. From 2014-2018, Horton, in his first NFL coaching job, served as an assistant special teams coach. After being promoted to special teams coach in 2019, Horton held the job in Baltimore through 2025, Harbaugh’s last season as head coach there.
The Redskins drafted Horton in the 2008 NFL Draft at No. 249 overall, in the seventh round. Horton actually had a good rookie season, starting 10 games, intercepting three passes, recovering a fumble, defending five passes, and recording 76 total tackles, including five tackles for loss.
However, his playing time dropped off significantly in 2009 and 2010, his final two years with the Redskins. They turned out to be the final two seasons Horton appeared in NFL games, as Horton was released by the Redskins just prior to the 2011 season. He was then signed by the New York Giants in March of 2012, before being released from the NFL for a final time in August.
