Trailers filled with waste dumped in lay-bys becoming ‘health hazards’ that ‘attract rats’

Fly-tippers are loading trucks with waste to dump in lay-bys, creating “health hazards” for fellow motorists.

Martin Burrows, an avid litter picker and HPV driver, has been cleaning up roads up and down the country on his breaks for years.

The army veteran has noticed an array of “horrendous” items during his clean-ups, ranging from bags and bottles of human waste to rotting discarded takeaway boxes.

However, a new waste “hazard” is being dumped on the side of roads right under Britons’ very noses.

Burrows told GB News: “Trucks and trailers are being dumped all over the country in laybys full of rubbish.

“People are loading these wagons just full of waste and parking them up and leaving them there.”

Burrows added: “It’s an attraction for rats, it’s a health hazard for the drivers who are using the lay-bys.”

He also warned that the trailers loaded with waste could also become environmental hazards if the waste caught alight on a particularly hot day. “They can catch fire if they generate heat,” he warned.

Trailer dumped

“Why would you want to do things like that,” Burrows questioned, adding that the trailers also pose a problem for truck drivers as it leaves them with nowhere to park.

Last month, it emerged that three trailers of waste had been dumped on the side of busy roads in Shropshire.

The “filthy” three 40-foot trailers have been sitting in lay-bys on the A53 and A41 since September.

A man who discovered the dumped waste said the trailers were “full of rats”, and he was shocked to drive by weeks later and still see the trailers had not been removed.

Lay-bys

“I was told the police weren’t interested, and I got in touch with the council and they told me it wasn’t their business,” he said.

Shropshire Council and West Mercia Police have confirmed that they are working with one another to resolve the issue.

Burrows set up ‘Truckers Keeping Britain Tidy’ over five years ago to create an online community for truckers who clean up the roads whilst on shift.

He estimates that around 20,000 bags of litter have been picked up between the 3,500 members of the Facebook group, where not only do they “do something good for the environment”, they also improve their mental state.

However, he fears that the lay-bys being left in an “unsociable” manner will spell bad news for drivers.

“Councils will shut down lay-bys if they think there is too much unsociable behaviour there. They’ll shut them down so they don’t have to clean them.”
