‘Totally bonkers!’ Boris Johnson takes aim at Emily Maitlis after on-air ‘breakdown’ over Donald Trump

Boris Johnson has taken aim at broadcaster Emily Maitlis after their clash during Channel 4’s US election coverage.

Speaking on GB News, he also hit out at the likes of Rory Stewart, claiming some broadcasters have an innate “aversion” to Donald Trump and therefore fail to give him a fair rap.

The former Prime Minister cited his personal relationship with the president-elect, telling Patrick Christys he “likes the guy”.

Asked about Emily Maitlis having “some sort of breakdown”, Johnson responded: “She did”.

He added: “It’s like the Tea With the Dames who see a mouse running up their petticoats and they shriek and jump on chairs and they call for smelling salts and all this sort of study.

“It’s totally bonkers. They’ve got some sort of deep cultural aesthetic aversion to Donald Trump.

“I don’t happen to share that, perhaps owing to some defect in my character, I like the guy.

“I can only speak as I find, whenever I have been with him, he’s courteous, he’s polite, he’s kind.”

Speaking in his Mail on Sunday column, Johnson said Maitlis suffered a “gradual descent into madness” during the election coverage.

He also spoke out on having to leave the Channel 4 studio early, saying he had to “catch a plane back from Washington to London”.

Johnson’s suggestion flew in the face of claims made by Maitlis’s co-host Krishnan Guru-Murthy, who said he was “fired” for repeatedly promoting his new memoir on air.

The US election was won comprehensively by Trump, and Johnson thinks the economy proved to be the Democrats’ achilles heel.

“People looked back to the time of the Donald Trump presidency and remembered that things were not only stable, but also quite prosperous”, he said.

“He had a clear and incredible message about growth, tax cuts and deregulation. They could see wasteful government spending was going to be cut under Trump, this was the promise that was being made.

“He had a story to tell. The problem the Democratic candidate, Kamala Harris, had was that she didn’t really have a story to tell about the economy. She had been with Joe Biden for the past four years.

“I think they did some good things, but it clearly wasn’t enough. She did not have a convincing narrative. That was why on the economy, he won.”
