Newcastle explosion: Body of man in his 30s found in wreckage after major fire

A second body has been found in the wreckage of yesterday’s devastating explosion and fire at a house in Newcastle.

On Wednesday, police had confirmed that a seven-year-old boy sadly died as a result of the blaze in Violet Close in the city’s West End – which erupted just after midnight.

The body, understood to be of a man in his 30s, was found later yesterday in the debris by emergency crews, with police making the news public this afternoon.

Formal identification for both those who tragically died is still yet to take place, the force said.

Northumbria Police’s Superintendent Darren Adams, said: “Our thoughts are very much with the family and friends of the two people who have tragically lost their lives.

“Specialist officers are supporting their loved ones and we would urge everyone to respect their privacy at this time.”

Six people, including a child, were hospitalised “with varying degrees of injuries” following the blaze.

Police confirmed on Thursday that just one remained in hospital: another man, also in his 30s, described as being in a “critical but stable” condition.

As the force’s investigation progresses, officers said they had no reports of any further missing people who may have links to the incident.

But the probe into why the property burst into flames remains ongoing, police said, with cordons set to be in place “for some time”.

It’s not just police investigating the inferno – a range of agencies are involved, including Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service.

Supt Adams said: “We are working with our partners as our investigation continues.

“For a number of reasons this is complex and time-consuming, not least due to the level of damage which has been caused.

“As always, we would ask people not to speculate about what has happened both online and within the community.

“As we have previously made clear – and I would reiterate now – we are committed to providing answers to what has happened.

“I would like to thank the community for their continued support and cooperation at this incredibly tragic time.”
