Sensex Today | Stock Market Highlights: Indian equity benchmarks snapped their two-day gaining streak on Wednesday, with the Nifty failing to hold above the 22,700 mark as selling in banking stocks weighed on the market. The Sensex fell 252 points to close at 72,782, while the Nifty declined 99 points to settle at 22,623.
The Nifty Bank underperformed the major indices, falling 165 points to 55,316 after gaining for two consecutive sessions. The midcap index also ended lower, shedding 50 points to close at 59,409. However, overall market breadth favoured advances, with the advance-decline ratio at 3:2.
The Nifty IT index gained for a second consecutive session, outperforming the major indices.
Among individual stocks, Transformers and Rectifiers India surged 19% after reporting strong second-quarter results. BHEL gained nearly 5% following its Q2 results, while Aegis Logistics advanced almost 8% after signing a pact to acquire a majority stake in Tristar.
Vedanta Group stocks also rallied, with Vedanta Power rising more than 11%. Bharat Coking Coal gained 8% after the company increased coking coal prices.
On the other hand, Shriram Finance fell nearly 5% amid profit booking. Meesho declined more than 5% as traders booked profits following optimism around its blockbuster sale. Bank of Baroda dropped nearly 3% after NMC Health founder named the bank in a $15 billion lawsuit.
GTPL Hathway fell 4% after reporting a net loss in the second quarter. Life insurance stocks remained under pressure amid reports on norms in an Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) consultation paper.
In the currency market, the rupee strengthened against the US dollar for a third consecutive session, closing at 95.15 per dollar.
