Suas Group and EIF expect the BESS Lipnice facility to achieve a five- to eight-year payback by combining day-ahead and intraday market trading with algorithmic management.
From ESS News
Czech industrial holding Suas Group and Slovak investment firm EIF have energized a 57 MW / 120 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in near the town of Lipnice nad Sázavou, located in Czechia’s Vysočina Region, some 100 kilometers southeast of Prague.
The 400 million CZK (USD 19.1 million) Lipnice BESS is now the largest operational battery storage system in Czechia. The second-largest is the 37.95 MW/41.7 MWh BESS at the Modlany Energy Park in northern Czechia, which was commissioned earlier this month.
The two companies said the facility can be used to help maintain the stability of the Czech electricity system, provide ancillary services to Czech transmission system operator ČEPS, or participate in commercial arbitrage on the day-ahead and intraday electricity markets.
The facility comprises 144 battery cabinets, 18 power conversion systems, and nine transformer skids.
“The storage facility could supply electricity to a city the size of nearby Sokolov for ten hours,” the joint statement reads. “It is a key tool for optimizing electricity trading and managing imbalances effectively.”
“It makes no sense to base the battery economy solely on providing technical flexibility,” the two companies went on to say. “Therefore, we will use BESS Lipnice primarily on the daily and intraday market.”
Suas Group believes BESS Lipnice will pay for itself within five to eight years, supported by revenues from multiple electricity markets and smart algorithmic management.
The future of the Czech Republic’s energy storage market will be driven by utility-scale investments and favorable regulations, according to analysis by Aurora Energy Research from November 2025. The agency forecasted the country’s total battery storage capacity to hit 6 GWh by the end of the decade. In March 2025, the European Union approved an aid package for 1.5 GWh of storage capacity in the Czech Republic.
