Turner tops out $64M New York trades education facility

A higher education project in New York state has reached a critical milestone.

Turner Construction has topped out the Applied Technology Education Center at Hudson Valley Community College in Troy, a 130,000-square-foot structure that will help prepare students for in-demand occupations, according to a July 30 news release. The project costs $64 million, per HVCC.

Once complete, the center will provide state-of-the-art learning environments that are designed to prepare students for careers in advanced manufacturing, semiconductor technology, engineering, robotics, clean energy and other rapidly growing industries, according to the release. These environments include specialized laboratories, flexible instructional spaces, collaborative learning environments and industry-focused training areas.

During construction, Turner had to work with HVCC to avoid major disruptions to the college’s activities while keeping to the project’s schedule and safety requirements.

Higher education construction projects are in a bind. As universities grapple with budgeting problems, the renovation backlog has hit its highest point in years.

For HVCC’s part, the center is underway as New York experiences a tale of two advanced tech sectors. On the one hand, about two hours away from the college’s location in Troy, a $100 billion Micron chip fab project is underway in Clay, which promises to transform Central New York. On the other hand, the state has put a significant hurdle in front of future data center work as Gov. Kathy Hochul recently signed an executive order curbing environmental permits for data centers.

HVCC’s ATEC facility is slated to open in 2027, according to the college.
