Welcome to Snack Drop, a column where we give you the lowdown on all of the best new(ish) to market snacks that have come across our desks this month.
This month: Red velvet protein cereal, a churro-inspired nut mix, and the seed crisps we can’t stop snacking on.
B.T.R. Nation Crispy Treats
I’m of the opinion that Rice Krispies treats are a perfect food, so when I heard that B.T.R. Nation was launching their own “superfood”-packed version, I was intrigued (if a bit skeptical). I’m happy to report that the treats earn an A+ in my book on both the texture and flavor fronts—and it doesn’t hurt that they offer 6–7 grams of fiber per serving. They fall somewhere between a classic crispy treat and the Quaker Chewy Bars of my youth, made up of a mixture of nut butter, brown rice crisps, and pea protein crisps. My favorite of the three flavors is the Peanut Butter, but the Classic Vanilla and Cocoa are excellent too. —Alaina Chou, commerce writer
Daily Crunch Cinnamon Churro Sprouted Nuts
It’s no secret around here that I love a nut-based snack mix, something Daily Crunch does very well (and in very fun flavors). Their newest Churro flavor—which consists of sprouted almonds and cashews tossed with coconut sugar, cinnamon, vanilla, and sea salt—has just the right amount of sweetness and warm spice. Plus, the sprouted nuts have a great crunch, which the brand explains (in a lovely diagram on the back of the package) comes from the special soaking and activation process of the nut. Date Better Naked Dates
I’ve long been a fan of Date Better’s chocolate-covered nut butter-stuffed dates, but here’s the thing: I tend to make a mess while eating them, and I’ve never found the chocolate entirely necessary, especially when I’m eating the dates as a snack as opposed to a post-dinner dessert. Lucky for me, the brand just launched a whole product line of “naked” stuffed dates, a.k.a. dates sans chocolate. They’re available in six flavors, but I’ve been particularly drawn to the Key Lime Pie, which features a plump Medjool date filled with cashew butter, crunchy toasted quinoa, tart lime powder, and salt. —A.C.
Jöey Nordic Seed Crisps Nori and Tamari
I fell hard for Jöey’s seed crisps when I first tried them a couple months ago, and the brand’s three new flavors did not disappoint. The Sumac and Blue Salt and Peri Peri are both great, but my favorite is the Nori and Tamari, which has flecks of toasted nori scattered throughout. Like the rest of the Jöey flavors, the crisps are satisfyingly salty and ultra-crispy, great on their own or served alongside soup or salad. —A.C.
Seven Sundays Red Velvet Oat Protein Cereal
I went through a distinct phase where my cupcake of choice was red velvet, so I’ve been feeling a ping of nostalgia as I snack on (or rather, eat by the handful) the new red velvet limited-edition oat protein cereal from Seven Sundays. The red color comes from beet powder (not Red Dye No. 3!), and the red velvet flavor is rounded out by Dutch-processed cocoa and vanilla extract with date syrup and coconut sugar as the sweeteners. It’s just as good on its own or in a bowl of your milk of choice, and it packs in 5 grams of protein per serving—so you can have your cake for breakfast and eat it too. —K.K.
