The monsoon was initially expected to reach Mumbai around June 10-11. However, its advance along the western coast has remained stalled since June 8. Earlier this week, IMD officials indicated that Mumbai’s monsoon onset is now likely around June 25.
In its latest forecast, the IMD said isolated to scattered rainfall is likely over Konkan and Goa through June 21, with rainfall activity expected to intensify thereafter. Fairly widespread to widespread rainfall is forecast over Konkan and Goa from June 22 to June 25, with isolated heavy rainfall likely on June 23 and 24.
The weather office also said thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 40-50 kmph, gusting up to 60 kmph, are likely over Konkan and Goa during June 21-24 and over Madhya Maharashtra during June 22-26.
It said conditions are favourable for the monsoon to advance further into Telangana, Odisha, Jharkhand, and Bihar, and into some parts of Chhattisgarh around June 23.
While rainfall activity is expected to increase, the IMD has warned of heatwave conditions in isolated pockets of Konkan, Goa, and Madhya Maharashtra on June 20. Maximum temperatures over Maharashtra may gradually fall by 2-3 degrees Celsius.
Elsewhere in the country, isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim and parts of northeast India during the week, with the possibility of extremely heavy rainfall over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim through June 21. Moderate to severe thunderstorm activity is also likely over parts of central and eastern India.
As far as the national capital is concerned, the IMD has forecast very light to light rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds of 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph over Delhi on June 21 and 22, with maximum temperatures expected to remain in the 38-40 degrees Celsius range before easing slightly.
