Meghan Trainor just gave an update on the “toxic” mom group drama heard ’round the internet, revealing in an interview with Us Weekly published Wednesday (April 15) that Ashley Tisdale has apologized to her amid the fallout.
More than three months after the High School Musical alum wrote an essay for The Cut detailing her negative experiences with a group of fellow mothers — some of whose identities, including Trainor’s, were quickly uncovered by social media sleuths — the singer-songwriter shared her side of the story. “I was a bad mom friend,” she began, explaining that the moms in question “had so many events” and were “awesome and always there for each other,” but due to her own busy schedule, she “never went.”
“The last time I saw them was like a year ago, and I brought them to dinner and paid for it because I was like, ‘I’m so sorry that I’m just not present,’” Trainor continued. “And then that [story] popped up, and I was like, ‘What?!?’ I saw my face everywhere, and wait a second, I’m not even there … But some moms in that group don’t want to be famous and never wanted attention. It was really hard for a lot of moms, and I felt so bad.”
That said, the hitmaker noted that she also “felt bad for Ashley, that she was ever that sad” over the group’s dynamic. “I think it was just a lot of miscommunication and confusion,” Trainor added. “I don’t really know what happened, but I wish them all the best. I texted all of them. Ashley texted me, ‘I’m sorry, your name got dragged in.’ And I was like, ‘It’s all right, girl. The world’s a silly, crazy place, and they just want something to talk about.’”
Tisdale’s essay went up on the first day of January, sparking widespread discourse over whom she was referring to when she wrote about feeling “left out” and like she was “back in high school” in a group of other moms. In addition to Trainor, fans also speculated that Hilary Duff and Mandy Moore were in the group in question.
Later, Duff said her piece about the situation on Call Her Daddy. “I don’t really think people had to connect very many dots, do you?” she told host Alex Cooper. “It sucks on behalf of, like, six women and all of their lives … the timing felt not great, and I felt used.”
Trainor, however, has remained lighthearted throughout the saga. Posting a TikTok poking fun at the online discourse, the singer — whose new album Toy With Me arrives on April 24 — referenced the title of one of her songs to convey her feelings on the matter: “Still Don’t Care.”
