The’ 90s continue to be a source of inspiration on and off the runways—from the slip dresses to heeled sandals. One defining style of the decade that often goes unnoticed, however, is the sheer skirt: Supermodel Claudia Schiffer opened Chanel’s spring 1993 couture show in a gauzy black midi styled with a fitted blazer. Miu Miu then embraced the gossamer fabric for its spring 1996 collection, sending a young Kate Moss out in a light-as-air knee-length number paired with a checkered bodysuit. Prada introduced transparent layers of its own the following year, a theme that continued into spring 1998 with Calvin Klein’s clean, minimalist layers. The decade ended with Helmut Lang’s wispy separates, coiled around the body in soft pink and vibrant pops of fuchsia.

Spring 2026 delivered endless sheer skirt inspiration—built around clever layering moments. At Prada, they arrived as diaphanous overalls styling over contrasting briefs. Fendi brought sunshine to the trend with a matching set layered atop embellished underpinnings. Dries Van Noten showed an array of sheer skirts in vivid colors and retro-inspired prints, while at Chanel, the idea of naked dressing reached new heights, with translucent bottoms ranging from skirts to jeans-esque trousers (the latter seen on Margot Robbie attending the house’s fall show).

As temperatures rise, so does the appeal of the sheer skirt for everyday wear. Layered with a button-down and backless loafers, it feels considered for daytime; styled with a blazer and python-printed pump, you get an evening-ready look that’s sensual but not over-the-top. Ahead, we’re showing you eight ways to pull off the sheer skirt—it’s more versatile (and less intimidating) than you think.

Daytime Polish

Pair the sheer skirt with a poplin shirt and backless loafers for an easy, everyday look. Tuck the shirt in or leave it out, depending on your mood (easygoing) or the occasion (formal, sharp).

Style the sheer midi with a blazer, white tee, and snakeskin pumps, then add a pair of black shorts for just the right amount of coverage.

For a fancy night out, we love the idea of a sheer lace skirt with a long bustier top. Bright red sandals and sparkly earrings complete the look with elegant ease.

Summer Color Palette

Pink and red—as seen at Chanel and Balenciaga—continue to inspire us this spring. Give it a go by pairing Dries Van Noten’s red skirt with a high-neck pink tank top, complete with Tory Burch’s shell pendant, and a minimalist loafer by Yuni Baffa.

A Touch of Sport

A sheer knit matching set from Cos worn alongside chrome sneakers and a leather dustbag is equal parts sporty and chic.

Scarf Dressing

Scarves had a commanding presence on the spring runways. We love the idea of knotting a printed silk scarf over a sheer skirt as a pareo; flip-flops and a simple fitted tank keep the overall look casual.

Dimensional Layers

Rethink the mini dress by wearing it as a top over a neutral-colored sheer skirt, then elevating it with heeled flip-flop sandals, and an embellished pouch.
