Fresh guidance for holidaymakers in Australia as ‘severe hazards’ could occur – what to do in an emergency
In a fresh warning for British holidaymakers, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) updated its information on tropical cyclone Alfred.
Tourists were advised that the cyclone is forecast to affect five parts of Australia: Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast, South East Queensland and Northern New South Wales.
This builds upon recent advice issued by the FCDO about tropical cyclone Alfred. In the latest update, Britons were given more resources that may help them.
Earlier today, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) warned: “The cyclone is nearing the coastline and severe weather is gradually increasing, however, the most intense rain will not arrive until the weekend for many regions.”
The FCDO explained that Australia’s cyclone season typically runs from November to April.
Tropical cyclone Alfred could result in “localised flash flooding and severe coastal hazards, which could lead to transport disruption and power outages”.
These conditions may lead to significant transport disruption and power outages, potentially affecting thousands of residents and tourists.
The FCDO’s warning comes as authorities prepare emergency responses in the affected areas.
Holidaymakers should stay informed by following the advice of local authorities and check with their airline or travel agent for any travel updates.
The FCDO told Britons: “Remember in Australia, the Emergency Services number is 000.”
The Australian Communications and Media Authority stated: “You should call 000 if you need urgent help from police, fire or ambulance services.
“Telstra answers calls to the emergency service numbers 000 and 112 and transfers the call, and information about your location, to the emergency service you request.
“You should only call 000 when someone is seriously injured or in need of urgent medical help, your life or property is being threatened, or you have just witnessed a serious accident or crime.
“If a situation is not urgent, you should look up the number of your local police, fire or ambulance service.”
The FCDO provided several official resources for those seeking information about tropical cyclone Alfred.
