AI war erupts as Google launches most powerful system yet in battle against OpenAI
Google has launched its most efficient artificial intelligence system as the war for the most powerful Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) system flares up against Microsoft-funded OpenAI. Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind announced the newest addition to the Gemini model series — Gemini 1.5 Flash during the opening keynote of the Google I/O developer conference, held in Mountain View, California on Tuesday.
The same presentation also saw confirmation that Google search will be overhauled for the first time since its launch in 1998. Powered by AI, Google will “let the AI do the searching for you,” generating custom responses, meal plans, travel itineraries, and essays based on your question.
The AI battle is particularly important for Google because the new tools give consumers more advanced and creative ways to access online information.
It follows OpenAI’s launch of a new AI model and desktop version of ChatGPT on Monday. The company said GPT-4o is “twice as fast” as the previous top-end model, GPT-4 Turbo, and a fraction of the cost.
Google says its latest Gemini model, known as Gemini 1.5 Pro, has the ability to process multiple large documents — 1,500-pages total — or summarise 100 emails. Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis said: “We heard from developers that they wanted something faster and even more cost-effective.”
