Meghan Markle’s father makes his feelings clear on the Duchess of Sussex’s ex-husband

Meghan Markle’s father has made his feelings clear about the Duchess of Sussex’s ex-husband, during a new interview.

Thomas Markle, the estranged father of Meghan, has revealed plans to leave his Mexican home of ten years and start a new life in Southeast Asia at the age of 80.

The Emmy-award winning Hollywood lighting director told The Mail on Sunday he is seeking a ‘fresh start’ abroad in 2025.

Mr Markle, who has experienced significant health challenges including two heart attacks and a stroke in recent years, says his decision is driven by a desire to find “peace” and “kinder people”.

He said: “I am ready for a change. I have felt stuck in a rut for some time and I am ready to meet new people and experience kindness.”

Mr Markle has decided not to renew the lease on his cliffside home in Mexico, where he has lived for the past decade.

He plans to explore his options with his son Tom Jr, 58, Meghan’s half-brother.

He said: ‘I don’t know where I’ll end up but it is time to move on and find a place where I can live among kind people and enjoy the time I have left.’

His current home contains reminders of the past, including videos of Meghan’s first wedding to Hollywood producer Trevor Engelson in Jamaica in 2011.

“I really liked Trevor,” Mr Markle said softly. “I don’t think he ever understood why she dumped him, either.”

Southeast Asia has emerged as Mr Markle’s preferred destination, drawing from his earlier travels in the region.

“I travelled in that part of the world when I was a younger man. The people are so kind and welcoming, and they are respectful to older people,” he said. “It is a place of culture and beauty.”

The 80-year-old cited practical reasons for considering the region.

“In South-East Asia the medical care is good, you can live reasonably cheaply, the people are kind and respect older people and the food is healthy,” he explained.

The personal toll of family estrangement remains evident, as Mr Markle has never met his son-in-law Prince Harry or Meghan’s children.

Mr Markle’s grandchildren include five-year-old Archie and three-year-old Lilibet, who was named after the late Queen.

His decision to relocate appears driven by a wish to leave behind the difficulties of recent years.

He said: “I want whatever time I have to be peaceful with none of the awful drama of recent years.”
