‘I’m a makeup artist – one makeup choice is best for anyone wanting to look younger’
Makeup can be used to enhance your features, cover blemishes or as a fun way to show your personality.
How you apply foundation, lipstick and eyeliner can help you look years younger but, unfortunately, it also has the ability to age you.
The quest for youthful-looking skin has led many women over 50 to embrace a surprising beauty trend: wearing less makeup, according to Yolanda Dohr, makeup artist at Beam – London’s go-to makeup destination, with a flagship store which opened in Belgravia in November.
Whilst heavy foundations and powders were once considered essential for a polished look, the beauty expert now advocates for a more minimal approach to achieve a fresher appearance.
Yolanda warned that heavy layers of foundation and powdery products can be particularly ageing for those over 50.
She said: “It tends to sit in lines, enhancing them, especially those around the eyes. This can make you look tired and more wrinkly than before.”
Instead of heavy makeup, cream-based products are emerging as the ideal choice for mature skin.
The expert continued: “Cream products are ideal for those with mature skin as they connect with and sit better on the skin. The skin has natural oils and moisture so they appear more natural.”
These formulations often come with additional skin care benefits which can give your complexion an extra boost.
The expert noted that cream products can also help plump up fine lines and wrinkles, contributing to a more youthful appearance.
Yolanda explained: “For mature skin, they are particularly beneficial as they often have additional skin care benefits built into the formulations so they can help to retain moisture so skin appears more healthy and glowing which makes it appear more youthful.
“Also cream formulations can plump up fine lines and wrinkles. I love any of the cream products from Milk Makeup, KVD, Glisten Cosmetics and Fenty Beauty.”

Skin care is incredibly important and the shift towards minimal makeup reflects a broader change in attitudes towards ageing.
Yolanda concluded: “Less is really more, especially after 50. Investing in good skin care is much more important and of course, [people] over that age become more confident in their own skin, accepting themselves and trying to encourage other women to do the same.”
