Birmingham shooting: Man dead and another critically injured as police arrest suspect

A man was shot dead and another critically injured in a shooting in Birmingham last night.

Local police attended the scene at Rotton Park Road in Edgaston, following reports that two people had been shot yesterday evening, just before 11pm.

The man, described as being in his 20s, was pronounced dead, after he was found in a car, according to West Midlands Police.

The other man – in his 30s – was found injured at a bus stop and was hospitalised. He remains in critical condition, the police have said.

Police arrested a man in his 30s on suspicion of murder at around 12.30am, who has remained in custody.

Officers are still on the crime scene, while nearby roads have been closed off.

Detective Inspector Nick Barnes – who works for the West Midlands Police Homicide team – said: “This is a tragic incident, and we have worked through the night to understand exactly what happened.

“We’ve already made good progress and arrested a suspect, but I still need to hear from anyone who was in the area that we’ve not already spoken to.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:

“This happened near the busy junction with City Road and it may be that you’ve got dashcam footage or mobile phone footage from the area just before 11pm.

“We really need to hear from you so that we can build as clear a picture as possible of what happened.”

Police have requested anyone with further information to get in contact with the force, while anonymous tip-offs can be given via Crimestoppers.

Mohammed Faisal – a resident who lives near Rotton Park Road – told the BBC that he heard gunshots while watching television.

He said: “I was watching Dark Matter and I heard two shots, then a third. Five minutes later I saw the blue lights turn up and I knew something bad had happened.

“We get a lot of crashes by the junction here, so I wondered if it was that at first but then it became obvious it wasn’t.

“It’s extremely worrying especially when you have children living here like I do. You don’t want something like this happening near your home.”
