One person has died and at least two have been seriously injured in a stabbing in a picturesque French town.<\/p>\n

The attack took place at a market in the eastern city of Mulhouse, on the border of Germany, on Saturday afternoon.<\/p>\n

The suspect, a 37-year-old man, was arrested at the scene.<\/p>\n

He reportedly shouted “Allahu Akbar” (God is great) during the stabbing spree, according to local media.<\/p>\n

The man is on a terror-prevention watchlist, local outlets reported citing the local prosecutor.<\/p>\n

The watchlist, called terrorism and radicalisation prevention file (FSPRT), uses data from numerous authorities on individuals in the hopes of preventing “terrorist” radicalisation. <\/p>\n

It was launched in 2015 following a series of attacks on satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo’s offices, as well as a Jewish supermarket.<\/p>\n

The suspect also reportedly has a previous conviction related to advocating terrorism, according to Le Parisien.<\/p>\n

The seriously injured are understood to be police officers.<\/p>\n

Three more officers were lightly injured in the attack, which occurred during a demonstration, the local prosecutor said.<\/p>\n

Mulhouse mayor Michele Lutz said on Facebook: “Horror has seized our city.”<\/p>\n

She said that the incident was being investigated as a terror attack, though added “this must obviously still be confirmed by the judiciary”.<\/p>\n

Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau is expected to travel to the scene of the attack later today.<\/p>\n

France\u2019s national anti-terror prosecutors unit (PNAT) said it was taking charge of the investigation.<\/p>\n
