‘They haven’t apologised!’ Heartbroken mum of murdered teen hits out at BBC for promoting rapper who killed her son

The mother of Jimmy Mizen has said that there are “no excuses” for the BBC playing the music of the man who murdered her 16-year-old son and she revealed that the broadcaster “has not apologised” to her family.

Jake Fahri, who killed Jimmy in a London bakery in 2008, has been performing under the name TEN since his release from prison in June 2023.

The masked rapper’s lyrics appear to glorify the brutal killing, with references to watching someone “melt like Ben and Jerry’s”.

The revelation comes after TEN received airplay on BBC 1Xtra, where DJ Theo Johnson praised him as an artist who “really stands out”.

In one track, the rapper’s lyrics state: “Sharpen up my blade I’ve got to keep those necessary. Stay alert and kept it ready, any corner could be deadly.”

Another song contains the chilling lines: “See a man’s soul fly from his eyes and his breath gone… Seeing blood spilled same floor he was left on.”

Fahri hurled a Pyrex dish at Jimmy, which shattered and drove glass deep into his neck, severing an artery and jugular vein, with Jimmy later dying in his brother’s arms.

Speaking to GB News, Jimmy’s mother Margaret Mizen said: “I still feel like it isn’t real that this is going on.

“It doesn’t feel real, I am still feeling numb to the new information. I think that it is beyond disgraceful, I can’t believe that the BBC would do this.

“I know that they are saying that they didn’t know who he was but there must be a way of looking at these things.”

She added: “They’re making excuses. There’s no excuses. They played his music and playing the music of someone who’s committed murder, I think is disgraceful.”

When asked if she has received an apology from the broadcaster, Mizen said: “I don’t want to criticise them too much now because maybe they’ll come to me. But at the moment they have done nothing.”

A BBC spokesperson responded to the controversy: “The song lyrics you have put to us have not been played on the BBC.”

The broadcaster emphasised: “Decisions on music are made on a case by case basis and we have strict editorial guidelines in place before any content is broadcast or posted.

“BBC 1Xtra does not glamorise violence and this individual does not feature on any playlists.”

Fahri/Mizen

Fahri was released in June 2023 after serving 14 years of his life sentence for Jimmy’s murder.

Within 18 months of his release, the convicted killer had established himself as a drill rapper.

Mizen explained: “Jimmy is just too precious to let someone like Jake beat us. So he can say what he likes. I’ll still be way above him.”
