Tesco store closes down after large chunk of cladding fell off

A Tesco supermarket has been left closed after a large chunk of cladding fell off the building.

The Nottingham store was forced to close early on Saturday, March 15, with staff turning away shoppers throughout the weekend.

Pictures from the scene showed a section of the fascia had slipped, with new images taken today revealing that cladding had fallen off the side of the building.

Large parts of the car park have been cordoned off due to what the company described as a “maintenance issue”.

Ramarra Furr, 24, who lives opposite the store, described being “shook awake” by the sound of the fallen cladding.

“I woke up to a massive bang sound and instantly checked my bedroom window,” she told the BBC.

“It had all fallen down and it looked a mess. It was like the Titanic but with Tesco.”

Glenn Sutton, 54, who came to see the closure for himself, commented: “It’s on stilts so don’t know what they expected….It will be interesting to see how long it will be closed.”

The closure has significantly impacted local shoppers, particularly elderly residents who rely on the store.

Kevin Brewer, 64, said: “There are lots of pensioners in the town who do their shopping here, so going without will be difficult for many.”

He had visited to collect medication and food but was forced to go elsewhere.

Sue Graves, 89, expressed shock at the situation. She said: “I can’t believe what has happened. I am gobsmacked…I’ll get my family to shop for me whilst it’s closed. For elderly people without family, it will be quite hard for them.”

A Tesco spokesman said: “Our Bulwell Extra store is temporarily closed due to a maintenance issue.”

“We are sorry for the inconvenience, and we are working to reopen the store as soon as possible.”

The company has not provided specific details about when the store might reopen. Mouse Trap Soft Play, located next to the Tesco, has remained open despite the supermarket’s closure.
