Elon Musk has called for Nigel Farage to be replaced as Reform UK leader, claiming the politician “doesn’t have what it takes” to lead the party.

The tech billionaire made the statement on his social media platform X, just weeks after reports emerged of potential donation talks between Musk and the party.

The public criticism marks a dramatic shift in relations between the two figures, coming shortly after Farage had defended Musk to the BBC, praising the return of “free speech” following the entrepreneur’s criticism of the UK Government’s handling of grooming gangs.

The clash appears to stem from their differing stances on Tommy Robinson, the far-right activist currently serving a jail term for contempt of court, whom Musk has supported while Farage has distanced himself from.

Farage responded swiftly to Musk’s criticism, expressing surprise at the billionaire’s statement.

“Well, this is a surprise! Elon is a remarkable individual but on this I am afraid I disagree,” Farage posted on X.

The Reform UK leader stood firm on his position regarding Tommy Robinson, adding: “My view remains that Tommy Robinson is not right for Reform and I never sell out my principles.”

Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, was jailed in October after admitting contempt of court for making false claims about a Syrian refugee.

Asked by GB News’ Political Editor Christopher Hope last week if he would “accept Robinson as a member of your party”, Farage replied: “No.”

He continued: “Robinson has been to prison many, many times for many, many things.”

He added: “He’s got his own campaign. We are a political party aiming to win the next general election. He’s not what we need.”
