These preventative measures are crucial for maintaining skin health and appearance as we age, with specific focus needed on protection from environmental factors and mindful facial movements.

Dr Kenyana Emamian from Este Medical Group explained that everyday behaviours when properly managed, can help preserve skin’s youthful appearance and prevent premature ageing.

UV exposure stands as the primary threat to skin health, according to Dr Emamian, who identifies it as “the number one cause of premature ageing.”

The sun’s harmful rays can break down essential skin components that maintain firmness and smoothness.

“The sun’s rays break down collagen and elastin fibres, which are essential for keeping your skin firm and smooth,” explains Dr Emamian.

Even indoor environments aren’t completely safe, as UVA rays can penetrate through windows.

Dr Emamian recommended using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher daily, with reapplication every two hours when outdoors.

For additional protection, she suggested combining “sunscreen with a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses.”

Facial expressions play a significant role in the formation of wrinkles, Dr Emamian added. She said: “Squinting can lead to crows feet, while frowning often results in forehead lines.”
