London New Year’s Eve fireworks at risk of being cancelled over 45mph wind warning

London’s New Year’s Eve celebrations hang in the balance as city officials closely monitor weather conditions, following the cancellation of major festivities across the UK.

Edinburgh’s Hogmanay celebrations and Blackpool’s fireworks display have already been called off due to severe weather warnings.

Almost every region of the country is currently under at least one Met Office weather warning between Monday and Wednesday.

While London’s events are currently set to proceed, City Hall confirmed they are “monitoring the weather” ahead of the capital’s New Year’s Eve celebrations.

Edinburgh’s Hogmanay organisers announced that all outdoor events scheduled for Monday and Tuesday have been cancelled, including the street party and concert in Princes Street Gardens.

The concert was due to be headlined by Scottish band Texas.

A spokesperson for Edinburgh’s Hogmanay said: “Due to ongoing high winds and inclement weather in Edinburgh city centre, we regret to announce that outdoor events scheduled for Monday and Dec 31 are unable to go ahead on the grounds of public safety.”

The spokesperson added that they were “unable to continue with preparations and necessary set-up” due to extreme weather conditions.

Indoor events are continuing as planned.

The Met Office has issued multiple weather warnings across the UK, with a yellow alert for heavy rain and snow covering most of Scotland for Monday and Tuesday.

An amber warning for rain is in place around Inverness on Tuesday.

A rare severe flood warning of “danger to life” has been issued for Aviemore and nearby Highland areas, with extensive river flooding expected Tuesday morning.

Parts of northern England face a yellow wind warning from 7am until 11pm on New Year’s Eve.

Northern Ireland is under a separate wind warning from 6am until 2pm.

A 24-hour yellow warning for rain will affect much of Wales and north-west England from Tuesday evening.

While there are currently no plans to cancel London’s New Year’s Eve events, a spokesperson for the mayor confirmed authorities continue “to monitor the weather forecast closely.”

Other local authorities have already taken precautionary measures, with Ripon city council in North Yorkshire announcing the cancellation of their New Year’s Eve event on Market Square due to high winds forecast.
