‘I’m a DIY expert – four easy and cheap improvements will add considerable value to your home’
As we enter 2025, homeowners looking to add value to their properties have opportunities to boost their home’s value through simple DIY improvements.
The start of the year will be particularly busy for both buyers and sellers in the property market as many first-time buyers will be looking to buy their first home ahead of the changes to stamp duty charges in April 2025.
DIY expert and owner of Saxton Blades Multitools, Glen Peskett, suggested that with the cost of living crisis, improving your home has become a painstaking task.
He said: “As the cost of living crisis has affected many of us, making home improvements has become more costly. But renovating and decorating your home could add between three per cent and five per cent to your home’s value.”
The expert provided four simple and cheap methods for people to use to add value to their homes.
Kitchen Upgrades
The expert said: “The kitchen is one of the most important rooms in the house which can be a great selling point.
“One place to start is by replacing the cabinets and going for a new style and look. You can save money by finding good quality second-hand cabinets on sites such as Facebook Marketplace or eBay, and fit these yourself.”
Glen added: “Try adding a fresh set of paint to cabinets or the walls to brighten up the room. You could even use peel-and-stick tiles as a stylish and cost-effective way to spruce up the kitchen.”
Insulation Improvements
The expert said: “Many homeowners are struggling to afford to heat their homes, so finding a place that has good insulation and is energy efficient. It is a priority for lots of Britons buying a new home.
“One step is to stop any draughts or air leaks leading to heat loss by using self-adhesive foam strips around windows and doors, which are cheap and easy to install. You can also look at adding insulation into the loft or attic space if it doesn’t have it already or replace old insulation with better quality materials.”

Garden Improvements
Glen advised: “Potential buyers, especially families, will be on the lookout for a nice garden area to enjoy.
“Some DIY improvements could be adding lights in the garden to add some ambience. Building wooden planters around the garden with various plants on display can help to bring colour to the outdoor space, you can use scrap wood or constructional timber to put them together.
“It’s important to trim any bushes or trees so the garden looks well maintained before being put on the market.”
Lighting Updates
The expert suggested: “Having the right lighting in your home is so valuable in creating an inviting and warm atmosphere.
“You may want to swap any fixtures for more modern designs, such as for dining rooms to create a stylish and sophisticated room, using coloured shades will tint light, making it appear warmer or cooler.”
