‘If this man had been London mayor’: Shaun Bailey hailed for incredible speech shaming Sadiq Khan
Conservative Lord Shaun Bailey has delivered a devastating speech on Sadiq Khan’s crime record in London in City Hall yesterday.
The London Assembly Member blasted the Labour Mayor stating ‘growing up in London has a veil of fear’ because of rising knife crime.
He warned young people, particularly if they are black, are busy ‘trying to stay alive’ with some afraid to leave their homes.
His speech came on the same day leaks were reported that Khan is in line for a knighthood in Sir Keir Starmer’s first New Year honours as Prime Minister.
The move has drawn fierce criticism from Khan critics who highlight his time as Mayor coinciding with high levels of crime, a housing crisis and various woke initiatives.
It is the first issue that Lord Bailey blasted Khan for yesterday. In an impassioned speech, he said: “The black community and young people in London are under pressure, under unprecedented pressure.
“320 young black people have lost their lives to this scourge [knife crime] since 2016.
“I’ve been a youth worker for over 35 years. If you think you can distract people out of this pit of despair, you are wrong.”
Bailey then referenced a mother he had met who told him she wished the man who murdered her child had been stopped and searched so she wouldn’t have to live with the pain of losing her son forever.
He continued: “Let’s be clear. Growing up in London now has a veil of fear. Whether you are black or white.
“We have to do something about it. We sit in this room all the time and people talk about diversity, inclusion all the time.
“Well, if you’re black, you’re not included in any conversation here because you’re busy trying to stay alive.
“And if you think I’m exaggerating, speak to a young black person under the age of 25 and see what they tell you.”
Shaun Bailey pleads with Assembly Members to listen and take knife crime …
“My own nephew will not leave his house because it simply isn’t safe. He’s a 21 year old man. That is what we’re dealing with.
“So if we want to make London safe, we must not forget our victims. Not forget my community, not forget your community.
“We are elected to represent these people. And we are talking a matter of life and death. The amount of terror that is spread and trauma through this is immeasurable.
“So please do support this. This is about the future safety of young Londoners and London in general.
“Please don’t forget our communities in this. Please don’t forget your responsibility in this. You are elected to represent people. You will be saving our children.
“This is a matter of life and death. Thank you.”

This comes after a major report into knife crime offences found such crimes had risen year on year since 2020/21, but have not yet returned to levels seen before the Covid-19 pandemic.
Almost 15,000 offences were recorded in the 12 months to December 2023 according to the Home Office.
This is up 20 per cent from the 12,000 recorded in the previous 12 months but is slightly below the 14,680 in the year to March 2020.
