Hitler was a communist and the post-war years ‘rebranded him as far-right’, AfD leader tells Musk
The co-chair of the AfD has told Elon Musk that Adolf Hitler was a communist.
Alice Weidel, the co-chairwoman of the Alternative for Germany party, told the controversial billionaire that the “greatest success” of the postwar years was to rebrand him as far-right.
Weidel told the X owner that her party as the “only protector” of Jews in Germany, arguing that the country’s parties had driven many of them to flee by allowing “millions of people in… [to] commit thousands of crimes on our streets”.
She insisted that her party was a “conservative libertarian” force and told Musk their policy was the “complete opposite” of the Third Reich’s totalitarian economic agenda.
Weidel told Musk: “[Hitler] wasn’t a conservative…He wasn’t a libertarian. He was this communist, socialist guy.”
She also described the fascist dictator as an “antisemitic socialist. Full stop. No more comment on that. [The AfD] are exactly the opposite”.
Musk and Weidel also discussed the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and how the war in Ukraine could escalate into nuclear Armageddon.
Weidel said: “I want to have strong leaders in Germany…This is also my hope in Donald Trump and in your administration that you end that terrible war [in Ukraine], this worthless dying of young people every day, as fast as you can, because the Europeans, they cannot.”
The X owner responded, saying: “I think President Trump is going to solve that conflict very quickly. As you point out, it’s now been in somewhat of a stalemate for a few years. And all that’s happened over the past few years is hundreds of thousands of people dying but for no gains.
“And the longer this conflict goes on, the more Ukraine weakens relative to Russia. Ukraine is a much smaller country. It simply cannot afford the losses relative to Russia … the longer this drags on, the worse it is for Ukraine.”

In praise for the AfD, Musk said there was “nothing outrageous” about the party and that it represented “only common sense”.
Musk said Germany had been “infected by the woke mind virus” and that “People need to get behind the AfD, otherwise things are going to get very much worse”.
A YouGov poll published on Wednesday found that while 68 per cent of Germans thought Musk did not know enough about their politics to have a qualified opinion, 59 per cent of them expected his endorsement to boost the AfD at the ballot box.
He said: “The American people are demanding change…My recommendation to the people in Germany is to do the same … I am really strongly recommending that people vote for the AfD.”
Widespread protests took place last year against the party following backlash after revelations that senior AfD figures attended a meeting where mass deportations were allegedly discussed.
Senior AfD party members had attended meetings with neo-Nazis and other extremists. It has been reported the AfD met to discuss the mass deportation of migrants, asylum seekers and German citizens of foreign origin deemed to have failed to integrate.
One of the participants at the talks was leader of Austria’s Identitarian Movement Martin Sellner. The movement promotes the “great replacement” conspiracy theory that claims there is a plot by non-white migrants to replace Europe’s “native” white population.
AfD confirmed the presence of its members at the meeting but has denied taking on the “remigration” project championed by Sellner.
