Asda launches decedent twist on afternoon tea for shoppers to enjoy at home – including premium fish canapés
Asda is launching a new luxury seafood canapé selection just in time for the festive season, offering shoppers a premium at-home dining experience.
The £20 ‘Exceptional Afternoon Sea’ features 12 pieces of carefully crafted seafood canapés, including smoked salmon, lobster, prawns and scallops.
The launch comes as Britain’s appetite for upscale party food continues to grow, with searches for premium nibbles such as canapés and blinis increasing by 10 per cent compared to last year.
The luxury selection includes delicate blini canapés topped with truffle-infused cream cheese and salmon.
Mini scallop shells come filled with vibrant green spinach mousse and premium lobster. The third variety features fluffy mini crumpets topped with Marie Rose mousse and tender prawns.
The ready-to-serve selection offers exceptional value at just £5 per serving, making luxury seafood entertaining more accessible than creating fiddly canapés from scratch.
To buy all the ingredients to assemble the treats at home would cost nearly £40, giving shoppers a huge saving when buying the ‘afternoon sea’ pack. The trend reflects a broader shift in consumer behaviour, with 64 per cent of people now arranging big nights in at home instead of going out.
As dining out becomes increasingly expensive, shoppers are seeking high-end restaurant experiences they can recreate in their own homes.
The demand for luxury seafood is particularly strong during the festive period, with one in 10 Britons traditionally enjoying smoked salmon on Christmas morning.
Asda expects to sell millions of fish products this festive season, with their Exceptional Mild & Delicate Smoked Salmon predicted to be their bestseller.
Asda’s fish buying manager Jordan Muldoon said: “We know that our customers like to go the extra mile at Christmas.
“Taking inspiration from the trendy seafood bars were seeing pop up across the country and the growing appetite for more premium grazing options, our Exceptional Afternoon Sea offers shoppers a luxury experience at the affordable price they can always expect from Asda.”

The Exceptional Afternoon Sea will be available in Asda stores and online at Asda.com from December 21.
