‘A ludicrous man!’ David Lammy slammed for ‘sucking up’ to Donald Trump ahead of inauguration

Former Conservative MP Steve Baker launched a scathing attack on David Lammy, branding him “the most ridiculous Foreign Secretary we’ve ever had” over his dramatic shift in stance towards Donald Trump.

Baker ridiculed Lammy’s apparent U-turn ahead of Trump’s inauguration today, saying he was “enjoying it so much” watching the Foreign Secretary’s change of position.

Baker told GB News: “David Lammy, who apparently now is all ready to warmly embrace the next president of the United States.

“I’m enjoying it so much because he apparently said that Trump was a neo-Nazi and now he’s sucking up to him.

“He said that the European Research group, which I led, were worse than Nazis which was so offensive and so outrageous.

“Then when he was pressed on it he doubled down and said he meant it. Of course, I saw him in a studio where he was absolutely charming to me.

“So to now see him sucking up to the president of the USA after saying that, it really does give me some joy.

“I think he’s the most ridiculous foreign secretary we’ve ever had. He is a ludicrous man, and I really hope he gets found out and removed.”

He added: “I really feel for officials who have to work with such a man, who is such an opportunist and is capable of such enormous volte faces.

“I mean, to be now sucking up to Trump after everything he said. It’s so silly.”

David Lammy

Lammy had previously been one of Trump’s harshest critics, having branded the soon to be president a “woman-hating, neo-Nazi-sympathising sociopath” in 2018.

In 2019, before Trump’s state visit to the UK, the then-backbencher described him as “deluded, dishonest, xenophobic, narcissistic” and “no friend of Britain.”

He also memorably referred to Trump as a “tyrant in a toupee” while in opposition.

When questioned about these past remarks after the UK general election in July, Lammy defended himself by saying: “You are going to struggle to find any politician who didn’t have things to say about Donald Trump back in the day.”

However, speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme this morning, the Foreign Secretary struck a markedly different tone about the incoming president.

“The Donald Trump I met was a man who had incredible grace, generosity, very keen to be a good host, very funny, very friendly, very warm about the UK, our Royal Family, Scotland,” Lammy said.

The comments followed an “extended dinner” between Lammy, Trump and Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer in September.

During the BBC interview, Lammy described Trump as a “revisionist actor” rather than a “warmonger.”
