Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s new Netflix show given brutal verdict as fans ‘can’t relate’ to couple
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s new Netflix endeavour has drawn scorn from royal commentator Helena Chard, who questioned why the couple opted to shine a spotlight on polo.
The duke’s passion for the sport is evident in the five-part series despite his appearances being surprisingly rare.
According to Chard, fans can’t relate to the sport, saying it’s more suited to affluent audiences.
“There’s been no excitement in the run up to the show and it’s sort of been enshrouded in black smoke”, she said on GB News.
“Is there mass appeal? I don’t think so. Fans care more about royal drama than this.
“This is elite and it’s about elite, global players. It’s about grit to glamour. I really don’t think people relate to this.

“I am a photographer and I have shot many polo games. It’s not that exciting. It’s a lavish lifestyle that people, the general person, won’t be used to.
“It costs millions and millions of pounds to actually enter the sport. We know there is an element of charity to this.”
The series, produced by the couple’s Archewell Productions as part of their £80million Netflix deal, offers viewers an inside look at professional polo players competing in the US Open Polo Championship in Florida.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex serve as executive producers for the show, which promises to provide “unprecedented access to the world of professional polo”.
The documentary features elite global players and offers behind-the-scenes glimpses into the fast-paced nature of the sport, though the royal couple themselves make only brief appearances throughout the series.
Showrunner Milos Balac revealed that the Duke and Duchess had a clear vision for the series, aiming to make polo more accessible to wider audiences.
“They were wonderful. They were extremely hands-on,” Balac told PEOPLE magazine.
He particularly praised Harry’s polo expertise, noting the Duke’s valuable input on editing decisions to maintain factual accuracy and enhance excitement.
Meghan played a key role in highlighting the sport’s casual atmosphere, according to Balac.
“It was [Meghan] who really prepped me for how wonderfully casual polo can be,” he said, describing how people attend matches “in their pickup trucks and their cowboy boots, if not barefoot, with their dogs and their families”.
The Duchess emphasised her love for the relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere of regular polo matches.
