As the festive season gets into full swing, experts have warned about the hidden toll holiday celebrations could be taking on our hair health.

New data shows searches for heat-damaged hair have surged by 106 per cent in the past month alone, according to findings from Absolute Collagen.

The combination of increased social events, frequent styling, and disrupted hair care routines during the Christmas period can pose significant risks to hair health.

Between family gatherings and festive parties, many Britons find themselves reaching for heated styling tools and products more frequently, while potentially neglecting their usual hair care regimens.

Trichologist from Absolute Collagen Eva Proudman warned that the constant use of heated styling tools like straighteners and curling wands can lead to hair breakage during this busy social season.

The expert said: “Using a thermal protector when drying or straightening your hair will add extra protection and keep the heat at a perfect 180 degrees or lower.”

Eva emphasised that while looking festive is important, protecting hair from heat damage should remain a priority during holiday celebrations.

The disruption to regular hair-washing routines can also take its toll during the festive period. The expert advised that, while dry shampoo can be used to extend time between washes, it should be limited to just one day.

She said: “If you are busy and can’t find time to wash your hair, then using a dry shampoo to extend the washing for just one day is fine, but not for several days. The dry shampoo will build up on the scalp and can cause irritation.”

For those with longer hair, wearing it up can help extend the time between washes, while shorter styles typically require more frequent washing to maintain shape.

The festive season’s impact on hair health extends beyond styling, with hydration playing a crucial role.

Hair is composed of 10 per cent water, making proper hydration essential to prevent it from becoming dry and brittle.

Between festive drinks and cold weather, maintaining adequate water intake becomes particularly important during the holiday season.

Diet also plays a vital role in hair health, according to Eva. She said: “Eat a balanced diet, ensuring enough protein each day, as protein is key to hair health and hair growth.

“Most of us are low or deficient in Vitamin D. Taking 1000 IU daily should keep you in a good mid-range and will support your hair health.”

Experts suggested liquid collagen supplements as another effective way to support hair health during the festive season. These supplements contain protein and essential amino acids that can positively impact hair growth and overall condition.

Recent clinical evidence supports this approach, with a trial showing promising results. After 12 weeks of taking liquid collagen supplements, 60 per cent of participants reported experiencing less hair breakage.

This scientific backing suggests that incorporating collagen supplements could be a valuable addition to hair care routines during the demanding holiday period.
