As BBC names trans scientist among its top 100 Women, we ask: who would be on YOUR list? COMMENT NOW

The BBC has included a transgender Colombian scientist in its annual 100 Women list for 2024.

The broadcaster describes transgender biologist Brigitte Baptiste as using a “queer lens to analyse landscapes and species in a bid to expand the notion of ‘nature’ to better protect ecosystems”.

The justification did not wash online, with women’s rights campaigners piling in on the decision.

Kate Barker-Mawjee, chief executive of the LGB Alliance, posted on X: “This is Brigitte Baptiste, one of the BBC’s women of the year picks. Another breathtakingly insulting move from the woman-haters at the BBC.”

Actress Sharon Stone, Brazilian Olympic gymnast Rebeca Andrade, English singer Raye, Nobel Peace Prize laureate Nadia Murad and British artist Tracey Emin also made it onto the list.

Should it be Kate, Princess of Wales, who has handled her cancer diagnosis this year with courage and conviction, inspiring millions in the process.

Or maybe JK Rowling, Serena Williams or even Italy’s first female Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, who may deserve a special mention for pushing through important reforms that have managed to improve her country’s standing in Europe and internationally since winning the general election two years ago.
