Britons urged to save £400 on motoring costs with ‘simple changes’ ahead of Budget announcement
Drivers in the UK could save over £400 a year on fuel costs this autumn by making simple changes to their driving habits and car maintenance routines.
With petrol prices at a three-year low, experts have urged motorists to ensure they are implementing other cost-saving measures.
Savings experts have analysed ways to reduce their car expenses from driving economically to planning petrol station stops, these tips could lead to significant savings for households across the country.
Certain driving techniques can significantly reduce fuel consumption. Experts suggested adopting smooth and controlled braking, changing to higher gears more quickly, and reducing cruising speeds.

These simple adjustments could lead to a 10 per cent reduction in weekly fuel costs. Ian Wilson, managing director at Tiger.co.uk, stated: “We all know cars can be expensive to run, but making simple changes to your driving habits can actually create savings.”
By implementing these fuel-efficient driving methods, motorists could potentially save £98 per year on their petrol expenses.
This approach not only benefits individual wallets but also contributes to more environmentally conscious driving practices.
Planning petrol station stops can also lead to significant savings. Apps are available to help drivers find and plan for the cheapest fuel spots.
By utilising these tools, motorists could save over £120 a year on fuel costs. Reducing vehicle weight is another effective strategy. Every additional 45kg reduces fuel economy by two per cent, the experts claimed.
Removing unnecessary items like empty roof boxes or boot clutter can improve efficiency. This simple step could save drivers £22 annually.
Wilson advised: “Whether the fuel duty cut is made or not, keeping costs down is a priority for many households across the UK and there are savings to be had with some straightforward tweaks.”
Meanwhile, vehicle maintenance plays a crucial role in fuel efficiency. Keeping your car clean can save £58 per year for drivers covering the UK an average of 6,000 miles annually.
A clean car is more aerodynamic, allowing for more efficient travel. Properly inflated tyres can boost fuel economy by up to three per cent. Reducing heat and air conditioning usage can further improve efficiency by 10 per cent.
When combined, these measures could potentially save drivers £126 per year. Wilson emphasised: “Even keeping it clean, clear of clutter and with properly inflated tyres can make a difference.”
Regular maintenance not only saves money but also ensures better vehicle performance and longevity.
Wilson added: “Although petrol costs recently fell to a three-year-low, the fuel duty cut implemented in March 2022 may not be continued following the October budget.”
