James May, 61, flooded with support as Grand Tour star unveils painful injury from ‘ironic’ cycling accident
James May, 61, has been urged to “get well soon” by hoards of his fans after revealing he’d injured himself in a “bike accident”.
The motoring journalist, who recently made a tear-jerking return to screens in his final The Grand Tour, claimed he’d “bust my wrist” as a result of the incident.
The injury to May was so severe that it meant he was unable to take part in a charity bike ride that he had planned for Tuesday.
May detailed the injury in a post on X where he explained that he’d still be attending the charity cycle trip but in the comfort of a car because of his ailment.
“I’m taking part in a charity bicycle ride today, with the Armonico Consort and me old mate Oz Clarke (OBE),” May began.
“But I’m going in the car, because I bust my wrist in a bicycle accident.”
He followed up on his unfortunate health update with another post about the event, this time including a snap from proceedings.
“This is the event,” he wrote to his 3.2 million followers. “I was supposed to accompany the musicians upon the piano, but now can’t.
“I’m expected to join in the singing. Avoid the area,” he sarcastically signed off.
Before long, May was inundated with comments from fans wishing him a “speedy recovery” – and a few who pointed out the “irony” of the injury given his history behind the wheel of numerous cars on Top Gear and The Grand Tour.

“That’s awesome you’re still participating in the charity ride, even if it’s from the car! Hope your wrist heals up quickly,” one fan praised before a second penned: “I can hear the ‘Oh Bugger!’. Get well soon.”
A third joked: “I thought [Richard] Hammond was meant to be the one getting injured but I wish you a quick recovery James.”
“Ouch, nasty… hope you’re on the mend soon,” a fourth weighed in before a fifth highlighted: “You see the irony in that right?”
Meanwhile, a sixth remarked: “Years and Years, [Jeremy] Clarkson always said cyclists are this and that and bikes are dangerous and he even made that advert where the bike was crumpled……
“And you went on a bike and bust your wrist…..The one time you should have listened to Jezza……” (sic)
May may have bid farewell to his time working with Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond on-screen, but he’ll soon return to the spotlight with an all-new TV series on Channel 5.

The former Top Gear star has landed a new travel series titled The Great Explorers with James May in which he’ll delve into the history of three of the world’s most famous and infamous explorers – Christopher Columbus, Walter Raleigh and James Cook.
The series was announced in August, with May saying of the upcoming gig: “TV shows are often described as ‘journeys’ and ‘explorations’; this one really is about journeys and exploration.
“We all think we know the basic pub facts about these three great men, but the reality may come as a bit of a surprise. It certainly was to me.”
A release date for May’s new show remains under wraps for now while his final Grand Tour special, One for the Road, is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
