Emmys 2024 In Memoriam sparks outrage as Shelley Duvall left out in ‘disgusting’ snub: ‘Shame on you!’
The decision to leave Shelly Duvall out of this year’s In Memoriam at the 76th Emmy Awards in Los Angeles has been met with widespread condemnation.
The iconic actress, who’s arguably best-known for work in film with the likes of Robert Altman and Stanley Kubrick, was nowhere to be seen during the In Memoriam segment following her death on July 11.
Duvall may have enjoyed global recognition on the big screen but the actress also honed her craft on TV for audiences in the US.
During her long TV career, Duvall created and produced a number of popular shows, including Faerie Tale Theatre and Shelley Duvall’s Bedtime Stories.
Her two Emmy nods were for Outstanding Animated Program (For Programming One Hour or Less) for Bedtime Stories in 1992 and Outstanding Children’s Program for Tall Tales & Legends in 1988.
On Sunday night during the Emmys, musician Jelly Roll introduced the In Memoriam, telling viewers: “I believe that music is therapeutic. I believe that music can heal.
“I also believe that storytelling is just as cathartic… I hope that this song can act as a healing moment for those mourning the storytellers we’ve lost this year.
“If you are feeling lost or alone tonight, I want you to know it’s okay to not always be okay,” he added before singing his hit, I Am Not Okay.
The likes of Shannen Doherty, Chance Perdomo, Martin Mull, Richard Lewis and many others were honoured but when Duvall’s name failed to be read out, fans were outraged.
Taking to X, formerly Twitter, many Emmys viewers hit out at the organisers for the omission, including one who raged: “Did they seriously just leave Shelley Duvall out of the Emmys In Memorian segment when she spent years acting and producing several tv projects….#emmys #shelleyduvall.”
“How did Shelley Duvall not make it into the segment?? #Emmys,” a second questioned before a third let loose: “The loss of Shelley Duvall broke me harder than any other loss in recent years and @TelevisionAcad chose to omit her from its memoriam. Shame on you #Emmys.”
Another echoed: “The #Emmys In Memoriam was excellent with very few omissions — but leaving out Shelley Duvall was catastrophic. A TV icon for her ‘Faerie Tale Theatre’ alone.”
A fifth similarly was shocked: “The #Emmys actually forgot Shelley Duvall, oh my God! #FaerieTaleTheatre #AndLotsMoreTV.”
While a sixth blasted: “Shelley Duvall getting left out of the Emmy’s memorial montage is disgusting! She’s a legend! #Emmys #shelleyduvall.”
Meanwhile, another raged: “How dare they not include my queen shelley duvall in the memorial at the emmy’s i’m p***ed #Emmys.” (sic)
Duvall wasn’t the only omission from the In Memoriam segment as other viewers pointed out SCTV cast member Joe Flaherty was snubbed.
