Trump had been campaigning in Las Vegas on Friday night, before flying to Palm Beach in Florida – the location of his Mar-a-Lago Club and golf resort – on Sunday, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Two people exchanged gunfire outside the golf course, according to US media, which reported that the shooters were “targeting each other”, and the gunfire was not targeting Trump.
Law enforcement sources said the Secret Service were responding to the gunfire – which comes almost exactly two months after Trump was injured in an assassination attempt at a Pennsylvania rally.
While Trump’s son, Donald Jr, claimed an “AK-47 was discovered in the bushes, per local law enforcement”.
Republican Senator Lindsey Graham said he had spoken to the former President after the gunshots, adding that Trump was in “good spirits”.
He wrote on social media: “Just spoke with President Trump. He is one of the strongest people I’ve ever known. He’s in good spirits and he is more resolved than ever to save our country.”
