Robert F Kennedy would feel ‘great sadness’ at son endorsing Trump: ‘Siblings immediately separated from RFK Jr’

Robert F Kennedy Jr’s endorsement of Donald Trump would have been a “great sadness” for his father Robert F Kennedy Sr, it has been claimed.

The 70-year-old nephew of former President John F Kennedy announced he would be suspending his campaign to back the former President at a press conference in Arizona on Friday.

RFK Jr assured voters his name “will remain on the ballot in most states” – and in blue states, they can “vote without harming or helping President Trump or Vice President Harris”.

Introducing the independent candidate to the stage at his own rally in Glendale, Donald Trump declared RFK Jr’s candidacy has “inspired millions of Americans” and raised “critical issues that have been too long ignored in this country”.

However, the Kennedy family have since distanced themselves from RFK Jr and claimed his endorsement of Trump is a “betrayal”.

Detailing the family fallout on GB News, Professor Scott Lucas claimed that the Kennedy family has “separated” as a result of the decision, and RFK’s five siblings “immediately” sought to distance themselves from him.

Lucas explained: “Five of Robert Kennedy Jr’s siblings, the sons and daughters of the late Robert Kennedy, who was assassinated in 1968, immediately separated themselves from Robert F Kennedy Jr. and said there is no way that we support Donald Trump.

“And it would be a great sadness to our father to find that his son, in fact, had done this, especially with such unusual rhetoric. So the question of whether Robert F Kennedy Jr even has the support of the family, and thus they give the support to Donald Trump, that’s not what’s going to happen.”

When asked about the impact of RFK Jr’s endorsement of Trump on the election come November, Lucas admitted it is “yet to be seen” whether the decision will make a key difference at the ballot box.

Lucas told GB News: “I think it remains to be seen if it makes a difference, and that will only come in November.

“After Kamala Harris replaced Joe Biden In late July, Kennedy’s share of the national polls dropped from eight per cent to four per cent, so he already had lost a lot of voters.

“Now the question is, of those four per cent, how many of them would go to Donald Trump? And I think this cuts both ways.”

Noting the strong character of RFK Jr, he added: “Clearly there are some voters who will go with Robert F Kennedy Jr to support Donald Trump because he’s endorsed Donald Trump. But I think also he is, let’s say, a unique individual.

“He has his particular views from the argument that a worm ate his brain, or that our brains are being weakened by the internet, and the very unusual story about how he placed a dead bear in New York’s Central Park.”

Revealing a potential weakness in swaying voters towards Trump, Lucas suggested that amongst undecided voters, RFK Jr and Donald Trump working together may actually “sway voters away” from voting Republican.

Lucas said: “His support may not be one which is seen by many undecided voters as being that of a stable individual for Mr. Trump, and that could actually sway voters the other way.”
