Scottie Scheffler makes telling remark about arrest after strong finish to eventful PGA Championship

Scottie Scheffler has shown exactly why he’s the world No 1 by refusing to blame his controversial arrest by Louisville police on his poor Saturday round that ultimately cost him a chance of winning the PGA Championship.

The 27-year-old has been the standout star on the PGA Tour this year having won four events heading into the PGA Championship, including the Masters last month.

He looked likely to be in contention once again for another major victory after an impressive first round.

But his tournament took an unexpected and concerning turn in the early hours of Friday morning when he was arrested.

He was eventually released from custody in time to make it to the first tee before incredibly shooting a five-under-par round of 66.

However, Scheffler’s hopes of winning back-to-back majors were scuppered on Saturday when he shot over par for the first time in 41 rounds of golf.

He recovered on Sunday to finish 13-under-par for the tournament and admitted afterwards that he was looking forward to heading home after a chaotic few days.

But Scheffler refused to lay any blame for his below-par performance on Saturday on his arrest the day prior.

“Did I feel like myself? Absolutely not,” Sheffled admitted.

“Was my warmup the way it usually is and the distractions the way they normally are? Absolutely not.

“But I’m not going to sit here and say that’s why I went out and played a bad round of golf yesterday.

“I got arrested Friday morning and I showed up here and played a good round of golf as well.

“I’ve gotten better throughout my career of leaving the off-course distractions at home and keeping a pretty quiet personal life, and this week, obviously, that was not the case.

“I’m not going to sit here and say that I played poorly yesterday because of what happened on Friday.

“I just had a bad day out on the course, and I was proud of how I came out here and bounced back today.”

He added: “I’m just wondering what time bedtime is.

“I’m trying to figure out how quickly I can get home from here, and that’s pretty much it.

“I’m just fairly tired and ready to get home.”
